Many pools only pay once a block has been found by a member. Some days you may earn nothing at all, and you never know how much you're going to get exactly. And SMPPS pools give you less per share if they have bad luck.
Stale share bonus
Should it be your problem if the pool does not notify your miner of a new block? We don't think so. That's why we pay you for every share, even stale shares*!
Non-PPS pools that offer rewards for stale shares do so out of your own pocket: Think about it, their block reward is distributed over more shares, but the total will always be 25 BTC (50 BTC till block 210000)!
Orphaned block bonus
In practice, not all found blocks are accepted by the bitcoin network. For most pools about 1.5% of all blocks found turn out to be 'orphaned', which means there is no 25BTC reward. ABCPool pays for these orphaned blocks anyway, because our PPS reward is based on the optimal (0% orphaned) rate!
Non-PPS pools do not pay for orphaned blocks, unless they state otherwise. With them, you get your reward only when and if a block matures. They usually have a stats section listing the blocks and their confirmation status. They may have 0% fee, but you will miss 1.5% of the block rewards.
Immediate payouts
Shares appear on your balance within a minute. You can withdraw all your earnings at any time, manually or automated.
Other pools prevent you from getting to your bitcoins right away. They keep part of your balance in an 'estimated earnings' or 'unconfirmed rewards' section for an unspecified period of time, up to one week.

Pools that are not hop-proof may ban you when they suspect you of pool-hopping.
